A Tale of the Redbank Wal-mart

Two nights ago, I found myself in the new Wal-mart in Red Bank. On my way to a wedding rehearsal dinner, I needed to stop by quickly and grab a few things to take with me. The Redbank Wal-mart was the most convenient and fastest choice (well, it would have been had they opened more than 2-3 registers). Prior to this night, I had been in this Wal-mart once before. It is one of those places that you walk around and are thankful that you have teeth, finished high school, and have family and friends that love and support you. My heart breaks at some of the conversations I overhear across aisles and in check-out lines, just a place of broken and hurting people.

Friday night was no exception. Surrounded in line by middle aged women barking on their cell phones buying milk, kids' cereal and a pack of Budweiser, I wondered at their existence, the desolate emptiness of their hearts. I wondered at their hurts, those arrows Eldredge talks about that are lodged so deep within them and wished there was something I could do right then and there to grant them freedom. Only God through His Son and the Holy Spirit can do that, but I pray that in some way He might use me in those situations to provide even a glimmer of hope.

Amidst all this, I am heading to a rehearsal dinner. The 3-4 high school friends I know are coming will all be bringing significant others. It's all around me, and it's a battle against the little voice in the back of my head yelling "You're all alone! Nobody likes you or will ever like you! All alone! You'll never date anyone, because ... is wrong with you!" A lie to battle with truth, but a tiring struggle. As much excitement as I had going to the rehearsal dinner for a dear friend, I dreaded the struggle it would be, the nagging questions and whispers I was convinced were all about the little lonely third wheel.

So... anyways... lots and lots of things whirling around my already tired and frustrated mind, when the guy behind me starts chatting. Small talk turned into him inviting me to Headliners, apparently a concert venue of some sort in the Vista next weekend. Kind of in emergency mode at this point, I apologized that I wouldn't be around as I was from out of town and was headed back home the next day (technically all true :). He looked kind of dejected, but wished me the best.

I walked out of the store, glancing over my shoulder to make sure I didn't have a shadow, and then just had to laugh at God's sense of humor. It's not about me being good enough (I'm not). It's not something I can worry about missing. It's not something that I need to worry about, period. It's about God's power, sovereignty, perfect timing, and the goodness of His plans for me and trusting in that and that alone. Granted, I stink at this, but if and when He has someone for me, it will come in His time, I won't miss it, and he will be the one God designed just for me to be his helpmate, the one He designed to lead me closer and closer to Him. Because, ultimately that's what it's all about...not the hokey pokey after all, but falling more and more in love with and growing closer to my Savior.

3 + 3 = 1

A question was posed tonight: What are 3 goals for you in the next 3 years and 3 goals for the next 3 months? I came up with one for each category rather quickly... a job in 3 months and finishing up PT school in 3 years. After that, I was a bit at a loss. I realized that although those are things I am working towards, none of it is within my power or is truly what I am working towards. Things came to mind: I would love to complete a triathlon. I'd love to do my dream trip of Europe and the Middle East. Even more, I'd love for God to use me to lead someone to Christ, but that is not something I can even begin to put parameters on. What do goals look like in my life when I desire nothing else but to serve whole heartedly and passionately my God, my Creator, my Savior? That is the goal... love God, love others. That's it... what more in this life and this world do I want? I want Jesus, to have the pure joy and freedom that comes only from Him. This thought process encouraged me after a long tough week just learning about humility and trusting Jesus to provide for me.
It also reminds me of a passage from "Red Moon Rising" and I feel like this pretty much sums up my life at the moment and how I would like to keep it:
"But what happens if you're not sure where you're going, only who you're going with and how? What happens if you're in it for the ride rather than the results?"
To run the race to its fullest and to chase every moment after Him who died and rose from the dead for me. What that looks like as a single girl in today's world...I haven't pieced together just yet but I know and trust that God will lead me and give me strength to follow hard after Him.
Finally, just a thought about contentment, which has been a huge battle lately mostly with relationships. Talking to a good friend who reminded me of the nearness of Christ as our husband and His sovereignty in allowing someone to step in. God has a hedge of protection around our hearts, and He is our protective papa. There are God-inflicted physical repercussions for anyone who tries to mess with His daughters. Wow... me, who has always longed for that big brother protector and to be pursued... God is near and God is good... things I "know" in my head, but it's so neat when God reveals them to my heart and comforts me... my Abba.

Huh...

So, I pretty much love the Olympics!! I love watching people excel in the heat of competition and good sportsmanship triumph over anything political in the world that may be going on. Most of all, I love seeing entire countries unite behind one athlete, their claim to fame. In America, we have teams that are competitive in just about every sport. Some countries have one guy in one sport that the entire population clings all of their hopes on for the Olympic games. Granted, they should put their hope in an eternal Savior, but for that time, they are united.
Anyways... I was looking at the Olympic medal standings. This year I have tried to keep up with the Czech athletes to see what they are doing. As of right now, Czech has 5 medals, 3 silver and 2 gold. Mostly in shooting and canoeing. Yay! Then I realized that Phelps is going for his 8th GOLD tonight... one man has more gold medals than an entire country! That is absolute madness in my mind... not dissing Czech at all... just craziness.

Chasing Daylight

God always does things right!
His way is ALWAYS the best way,
even if to us it seems all wrong.

If you asked God for one thing and received another,
TRUST.

You can be sure that He will always give you what you need at the appropriate time.

What you want... ...is not always what you need!

God never fails to grant our petitions, so keep going for Him without doubting or murmuring, keep running the race set before us.

My dad sent me this e-mail today, and it just fits with everything I am learning and going through right now. During finals week, in what would turn out to be one of the last nights of fellowship with this particular group of people, we talked about our greatest fears. Mine is definitely a combination of being left and abandoned, change, and failure. The days to follow between then and now were characterized by a mass exodus and the realization that this was a huge time of change. My life would never be quite like it was during those college days again.

However, during this time, I have drawn closer to my Savior and have realized a sense of adventure in myself. Two years ago, I went to Wilmington, NC on a 10 day trip to support our newest church plant there. Coming home, I was convinced I would go back. A year ago, I planned my entire summer around going back to Wilmington and was full charge going on a month long leadership program Pastor Tom was having there. The door was slammed in my face, and I was sent to Czech instead. Czech was amazing and God was definitely orchestrating that entire process and teaching me so much, but the thought still lingered in the back of my mind: "How could I have been so wrong about Wilmington? I was so sure that was where my heart was at and where God's will was in my life." Since then, I have realized that God's will is to GO, geography makes no difference. God's will is our hearts, our hearts of worship and thanksgiving, of prayer and dedication to Him, and that can and will occur whether I am in Fort Collins, Wilmington, Czech, or Antarctica. When God has our hearts, we move naturally in His will.

Anyways, going back to the e-mail above. This year, I had nearly dismissed Wilmington all together. Then an idea of pursuing PT school and having a year off begged the question of what I would do with that year. A friend passed by me on campus one day in between class. Rather than asking "How are you?" he asked, "You wanna move to Wilmington?" It had only been a vague inclination in the back of my mind at that point, and I got really excited at the Spirit's working and confirming that path. A few roadblocks quickly fell away, and I sat contemplating a move to the east coast. Why wouldn't I go? Nothing came to mind.

So, here I am, moving to Wilmington... a process two years in the making. What I was convinced would happen last year, God had in His own timing. Everything He does is good. I have no idea what awaits me, but I am excited for the adventure of not knowing and following hard after Christ in this!!

One of the key components in my decision has been my reading a book called Chasing Daylight by Erwin McManus. It challenges its reader to seize the power of every moment.

"Don't wait for Him to remove all the uncertainty. Realize He may actually increase the uncertainty and leverage all odds against you, just so that you will know in the end that it wasn't your gifts but His power through your gifts that fulfilled His purpose in your life."

"Wouldn't it be great to be Lazarus experiencing the power of God raising you from the dead? Of course, there is a downside. You have to die for this to happen."
Whoa...

"but in between "once upon a time" and "they lived happily ever after" is called now."

"From the time of Abraham, [the Israelites] were a people commissioned to fulfill a mission. While their calling was specific, the application of that calling was always dynamic."
God's promise remained, but they ended up waiting 40 years in the desert due to missed opportunities.

"You are not called to be a survivor but to be a conquerer... I don't know what it means for others, but for a follower of Jesus Christ, what it means to live on the edge is to stand at the epicenter of where the kingdom of God confronts the kingdom of darkness"
** Christ with disciples standing at the gates of hell :)

"We are not given a detailed outline of how we should live each day. We are given a due north, a direction we should move toward... when you refuse to act on what you know all that you do not know paralyzes you."

"The life of the adventurer is less like organizing an office and more like windsurfing."

"...lean in the direction that you are supposed to go...God sends you in a specific direction. And yes, you must get off the life. God's instructions are to go, live life, take risks, move forward, advance."

"There is something exciting about an entire community leaning forward to advance the good on God's heart rather than leaning back, attempting to resist it."
Get packed and ready!... "if your church is full of missionaries, the rest is just geography... these were not people suddenly called to missions; these were people who were already on missions, and then God chose a change of address... you cannot advance the kingdom of God with people who are in retreat."

"It would be great if the signs from God that we should advance were always things like a perfect situation, all the resources necessary to succeed, or a guaranteed win. Yet if that were the case, there would be no adventure!"
**I'm on the edge of my seat ready to jump out the roof thinking about this one! WAHOO!!!!

So, these are some quotes that have stuck out to me... I'd like to go through them more individually, but for now, I just had to get them all out here. Food for thought.

Here's to a life of adventure, of chasing daylight, of seizing the now and not focusing on the "once upon a time" or the "happily ever after"
Last year, on campus, we played games at night over one half of campus... capture the flag, fugitive... hard core, all hours of the night. and I loved it! It didn't matter the things I needed to be up for the next day or the tests i should've studied for or the papers I should have been writing, if there was a game, i was there. It thrilled me! I loved the adrenaline pumping, edge of my seat, not knowing what's around the next corner, take risks, get messy, sacrifice one for your team mate, all out, no bars held thrilling rush it always turned out to be. An adventure. Why can't life be like this? Better question: why isn't my life more like this?
Excuses, stupid lame, same old, same old excuses. School, work, tired. The same ones most use to miss out on the game, we also use to miss out on life itself. In the words of my favorite Disney princess: "I want adventure in the great wide somewhere! I want it more than I can tell!" I refuse mediocrity, I choose to make the right turn, and not to apathetically look left. I want my life to be characterized like those late night campus games, like a good soccer match... adventure, chaos, uncertainty, thrill, and trusting in the One who planned it all before.

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways -Chardonnay in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroug hly used up, totally worn out and screaming 'WOO HOO! What a Ride'

This sense of adventure was my mindset in high school, and has been a little crowded by so many other things these last few years... welcome to freedom!!!!! Here goes nothing!

Every new beginning...

Dedication by the O.C. Supertones

Side by side, driving the same highway.
Leaving behind everything and everyone you love.
The cost to pay, to tell the world of Jesus.
Hoping that these bridges burned will not be just in vain.

It helps to think that somewhere you're feeling just the same.
And don't take even a moment for granted.
Don't lose heart when the world crashes down.

How many miles ahead?
I can't count the ones behind.
To all the friends that we've collected, all the people we respect.
For the hope and joy.
We made this up and wrote it down and dedicate this song to you.

No turning back, and can't say that I regret it.
When every day, God's promises testify themselves.
Sometimes it's hard, and the road keeps stretching longer.
Tonight my wife's a longing voice on a Holiday Inn phone.

How many miles ahead?
I can't count the ones behind.

I wish you God's speed, friend. You're always on my mind.
Will you remember me, say, seven years from now?
And where will we be then?

Well, I'm here for you now.

Encouragement

1) Is God in it?
2) Can you find joy in it?

That is my dream, so bring on the plunge!

Here I am. A senior in my very last semester at Colorado State University. I feel like I'm plunging as if on a roller coaster going up that first hill. That very last second when you gaze down the steep hill waiting to hear that click of the track to let you go, the intensity of that fraction of a second, the excitement, the terror, the feeling of "bring it on" and simultaneously that I really just want to go back to the platform; that fraction of second spread out over an entire semester. I feel the exact same emotions leaping off of a dock on a warm summer afternoon. I run with excitement towards the refreshing water, always go, go, go, and then there's that moment in the air just as my toes leave the wood that I realize there's no going back, and for a split second as the cold water engulfs me, terror grips me... then fades to complete and utter joy as I swim for the surface and re-emerge, already swimming for the dock to do it all over again.
Change... something I have fought against my entire life. I hate it; it terrifies me and it rips me apart. And yet, the thrill of it, the adventure, the things God teaches me when He shoves me out into the unknown give me a joy and a trust my heart could not have comprehended before the plunges.
"The only reason people hold onto memories so tightly is because they are the only thing that won't change when everything else does."
And then there's the question:
"Do you love Me more than...?" "Will you still love Me if...?"
Finish the sentence how you wish... I take away your friends, I take you away from this place you love, I take you away from all you know.
However, with the take away, there's the give as well... and give you faith and trust in the only One worth trusting, give you a joy this world can never know. Yes, it's going to suck and hurt, but you'll cling to Me and bring glory to My Name, thus making you more satisfied.
I serve a big and good God who has planned everything from my birth to death, and beyond. I've seen it before when I came here, and here I face the question once more. What now??

Somewhere along the way I lost track of my dreams, or I never actually knew what they were. Dreams of being a vet, a horse farm manager, a PT, a teacher have all faded. Funny how dreams change. I sat down the other day and journaled for a while on dreams. I discovered mine. To get up with the sunrise, clean stalls, and feed warm fresh hay and grains. To tack up a young ranch horse that "just needs some miles" and ride for the horizon, checking fences and looking for anything else that may need my attention. Or perhaps I take a new prospect over a cross country course I've built in a pasture a couple miles west. Whatever it may be, I fly and worship the God who is... and that's more than enough. Back home to grab some lunch before an afternoon filled with the chores of the season...outside tending animals or gardens, inside cleaning or putting away vegetables or cooking or sewing :)
Shortly before dinner time, I return, take a warm shower and get ready. I put on a cute dress, curl my hair and trade in my Ariat's for some dancing shoes. "You look beautiful" as I head to town for dinner, a play, and a night of dancing, and the only thing that gives away my day 'job' is a stray horse hair that clings to the bottom of my dress.
That's not all though. Lately, it has been impressed upon me to serve people. I have prayed for opportunities on campus to serve others, even just little things like helping people pick up a pile of books they just dropped or giving someone a ride. I was discouraged that I hadn't seen any of those type things. Then the other day, I was walking in a mob of people towards one of my classes, when another student turns all the way around and out of all the people walking by asks me where a building or classroom is. I smiled and told her and realized that that very thing has happened to me several times over the last week and a half. God is good! Some people's ministries consist of outreach or discipling, and I've never really known which one I was more suited for. Obviously we all do a little of both, but lately, I feel more led to a ministry of service (Thanks Holly!). Enter youth group. God led me there last fall, and as a ministry, we want to serve the community. I want God to develop my heart of service for those kids, so I can live it in front of them, and we can serve together as brothers and sisters.
A life of service, coupled with whatever my career may be, a PT, the illustration above, etc... it doesn't really matter.
That is my dream, so bring on the plunge.
